Donating to a Safer Ride

Thursday, August 2nd, 2018

Working safely is more than a core value at Egan. For most, it’s a habit that extends beyond the time spent on the jobsite or in the office – and into our passions that make each one of us unique.

For Tim Mandeville, Egan Electrical Journeyman, his time away from work is often spent with the Wild Prairie H.O.G. Chapter – a group of Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts who ride and volunteer around the Twin Cities. The group commonly visits the Ronald McDonald House and the Minneapolis VA Hospital, among other organizations.

As a craftsperson and trained safety leader, Mandeville recently had an idea to increase the safety of all the men and women who ride in the chapter. His push to further safety for the group included the addition of a small first-aid kit to each of the bikes.

“Egan’s safety culture has changed the way I look at a lot of situations outside of work,” said Mandeville. “I always take a moment to ask myself what could go wrong before jumping into a task. It’s the way I’m accustomed to doing things now and that’s where this idea came from.”

However, as a nonprofit, the group did not have the funding to supply a kit for every bike. To help Mandeville’s effort, Egan Company donated 50 first-aid kits to help create a safer ride.

“For me, safety is always in the back of my mind because of my work and training with Egan. It’s a good feeling to know I can share a small piece of this with my fellow bikers,” said Mandeville. “The chapter couldn’t be more grateful for this donation.”

A Decade of Safety Recognition

Tuesday, June 20th, 2017

For the tenth consecutive year, Egan was awarded multiple Governor’s Safety Awards by the Minnesota Safety Council for its commitment to workplace safety and health.

Egan received two Meritorious Achievement Awards recognizing incident rates that are better than the industry average for at least three years, and a score between 50 and 74 on a 100-point safety program evaluation program scale.

In addition, Egan was one out of 108 winners of the Outstanding Achievement Award, which recognizes exceptional efforts in implementing a comprehensive safety program and the excellent safety record we have achieved as a result.

“Recognition is always great, but that isn’t why we have a strong safety culture at Egan,” said Larry Hanson, Egan Company Safety Director. “Dedication to our safety culture starts at the top, and we are very fortunate to have leaders that are committed to providing a safe workplace for every Egan employee.”

Egan was one of approximately 250 Minnesota companies recognized at the Governor’s Safety Awards luncheon this year. To read more about the evaluation scorecard and award categories visit Minnesota Safety Council’s website.

Just Drive — a pledge to be distraction free

Monday, May 1st, 2017

Even in life’s busiest moments, it is important to practice safe habits at home, work, and behind the wheel.

This April, in recognition of National Distracted Driving Awareness month and in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety campaign, Egan Company employees and their families submitted pledges to “Just Drive” and become more educated about safe driving. In addition to the over 50 employees who pledged, Egan’s Board of Directors also pledged to show their commitment to this company initiative.

A local Minnesota TV station, Kare 11, also launched at campaign that provides some great resources. Their #EyesUp campaign is helping educate about distracted driving and create advocates to help make Minnesota roads safer.

Together, Safety Brings Us Home

Empowering employees is the key to ensuring safety on all jobsites, and it’s something Egan Company takes to heart with its Safety Brings You Home program. The intention is to make any employee – from apprentice to field leader to project manager – feel comfortable speaking up when they see something risky or unsafe onsite or even in the office.

As 2015 came to a close, Egan’s incident rate was the highest it had been in five years at 3.33. While it was significantly lower than the industry standard, our ultimate goal is ZERO injuries, so 3.33 was too high.

As a result, Egan’s Leadership, Safety team, and other key partners took a step back to evaluate and create a plan to reduce our incident rate. Egan’s long-standing safety program was expanded, further promoting safety on jobsites and in the offices.

Egan’s safety program has everyone working together for one common goal: going home safe. The biggest improvement made in 2016 was the standardized morning stretching routine. In addition to warming us up and getting us physically prepared for work, it is a great mental transition into a safety mindset to carry you through the day.

– Paul Hartman, Egan Company Electrical Field Leader

At the start of 2016, Egan employees on all jobsites and in all offices signed a safety pledge – pledging to work and live safely. Additional safety resources were provided for employees to increase their knowledge throughout the year.

Highlights of these efforts include:

  • Increase in available online and hands-on safety courses like CPR/First Aid, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, and Defensive Driving
  • Modified new hire orientation to emphasize safety commitment, including a follow-up orientation for field/shop employees within 30 days of hire date
  • Project managers more actively involved in the Continuous Improvement Observation and Safety Lunch programs

Lastly, a photo contest was held – employees were encouraged to submit pictures depicting what makes them work safely and get home at the end of the day. With an overwhelming volume of
submissions, all photos were incorporated into jobsite posters to remind us all what motivates us to work safe.

With these added safety efforts, employees were given the tools and knowledge to feel comfortable speaking up. It also added some excitement and energy into the safety program.

“After recognizing the need to lower our incident rate, I’m proud to say Egan ended 2016 with an Incident Rate of 1.67 – our lowest in the history of the Company,” said Larry Hanson, Egan Company Safety Director. “We continue our commitment to safety, and are continually looking into new efforts that give our employees every opportunity to advance their knowledge to stay safe and work toward our goal of zero injuries.”

For 2017, Egan is continuing efforts to support safety advocacy, both at home and on the job. Safety benefits us all, and our focus will continue on safe driving, preventing soft tissue injuries, and increasing the safety knowledge with employees and their families.

Why do YOU Work Safe?

To thank our employees and business partners for helping in reducing our incident rate to 1.67 for 2016, we’d like to show why we work safe.

Becoming America’s Safest

Monday, June 8th, 2015

The construction industry’s stance on workplace safety has drastically changed in the past century. Increased demand for safer work environments has led to many innovations, new legislation, and a noticeable drop in workplace injuries/deaths.

Paul HartmanEgan has set the standard for other contractors to follow. By having Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mandatory 100% of the time, it shows that everyone wants to see us return home safe to our families every day.

– Paul Hartman, Egan Company Electrical Foreman

These trends are encouraging, but there is no such thing as an ideal ratio. You can’t measure a tragedy’s impact by how many times it occurs, and citing statistical improvements does nothing to subdue the personal impact of a work-related injury or death. The only positive result comes from finding the will to do better by expanding the role of safety.

GantryUnloading1Egan Company first established a safety department in 1986. Having been founded in 1945, it may surprise some that Egan had gone over forty years without a dedicated safety program.

“There was widespread recognition of the seemingly inherent risks to construction back then,” said Larry Hanson, Egan Company Safety Director. “Some larger projects even had the predicted ‘acceptable’ number of deaths calculated beforehand in the scope.”

Getting hurt was a given, entrenched deep within the minds of those who worked in construction. To give you an idea, here is an excerpt from the American Electricians’ Handbook (published in 1932) about testing circuits for voltages: “The presence of low voltages can be determined by ‘tasting…If voltage is present, a peculiar mildly burning sensation results, which will never be forgotten after one has experienced it.”

FloorCrane1The construction industry’s safety expectations thankfully changed, and so too did Egan’s.

Egan has evolved a “zero-injury” policy. This more aggressive stance pushed the company to internally develop a proactive approach to safety, including initiatives like pre-workday safety plans, 100% eyewear/gloves, and the blue hardhat program for new employees.

Egan’s safety department continued to develop beyond focusing solely on compiling impressive statistics, unveiling a new program identity, “Safety Brings You Home,” that emphasizes Egan’s focus on protecting people.

[Shawn ColletteEgan’s] safety program goes above and beyond all programs I have seen in my 20 years on the job. When we work with other contractors, they often adopt our standards, making the job a safer environment for all.

– Shawn Collette, Egan Company Pipefitter Foreman

It marked the start of a transformational era for the company. Egan’s Incident Rates has progressed from 7.71 (2000) to 2.04 (2014).

This past year, Egan was named one of America’s Safest Companies by Environmental Health & Safety Today magazine in recognition of sustained safety excellence beyond industry expectations.

Egan continues to move forward in the belief that work-related injuries are preventable, but we can never claim to control all the variables. What we can control is how we collectively work together and support each other to promote safety.

Egan Named One of America’s Safest Companies

Monday, September 22nd, 2014

DSC_0579_editMINNEAPOLIS, MN (September 22, 2014)EHS Today selected Egan Company as one of America’s Safest Companies for its commitment to worker safety and health.

The America’s Safest Companies Class of 2014 represent safety excellence and come in all shapes and sizes, from firms with a few dozen employees to multinational corporations with tens of thousands of employees. And they have one thing in common: They believe there’s nothing more important than protecting their workers, the environment, and the communities in which they operate.

“Safety is woven into every aspect of Egan’s culture,” said Larry Hanson, Egan Company Safety Director. “A common sentiment is that construction is a dangerous business and accidents are bound to happen. Our company’s approach will never accept this view as the standard. Safety is a top-to-bottom priority here at Egan.”

Egan Company maintains an ongoing, aggressive commitment to provide all employees with a safe and healthy place of employment. Through its safety program, on-going safety training, safety policy and practices, and a full-time safety team, employees are given knowledge and skills to ensure their own safety in the workplace.

“Our motto is ‘Safety Brings You Home,’” said Jim Malecha Egan Company President & CEO. “Several years ago, we looked at adopting slogans like ‘Zero Injuries’ or ‘Target Zero.’ We felt these concepts were more about statistics than about our employees. We wanted a saying that emphasized to our employees that safety was about them and their families.”

All award recipients will be honored at EHS Today’s Safety Leadership Conference in Indianapolis on October 28. A feature will be published in a special section in the November issue of EHS Today magazine.
