Exceptional Service is Recognized by JFCS

The Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis (JFCS) has recognized Egan with an award for exceptional service for work on the JFCS office building that was completed in March. Egan was part of the project team that remodeled the interior and exterior of it’s existing building in Golden Valley, Minn.

Judy Halper, JFCS CEO, presented Egan with the award at the building’s ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8. “There are so many who were critical to bringing this vision of JFCS and The Stillman Family Foundation to life, including Egan. After so much hard work, we want to acknowledge Egan with an award for service.” – Judy Halper

The service award acknowledges the hard work of Egan teams: electrical and mechanical, technology systems, and building automation. Project managers include Carrie Thompson, Tom Buirge, Tim Johnson, and Dane Grunerud. Field leaders include Joe Baumgartner, Tom Rodrigues, Chris Nelson, Matt Snyder, and Eric Oja.

Thinking Outside of the Trimble Box

The Trimble Robotic Total Station is a no stranger to the world of construction. Used mostly at Egan for large, new construction projects, the “Trimble” plays an essential part of laying out electrical and mechanical systems.

Its state-of-the-art design was built to verify even the smallest details between the shop and field prior to construction on jobsites. This makes it an ideal tool to accurately lay out underground utility systems, between floor structures, and other flat-plane surfaces.

Though the Trimble has many uses, it had never been used for the glass and glazing industry until Egan Company took on its biggest curtainwall project to date: U.S. Bank Stadium.

“Given the massive size and architectural shape of the stadium, we knew we’d have to get creative,” said Dan Ford, Egan Company Field Services Manager. “However, the task to efficiently and precisely install glass to this 30-story structure was a challenge we excitedly took on.”

This project sparked a unique, innovative Trimble process allowing Egan to accurately lay out anchors directly to a vertical steel surface (different than Trimble’s intended use) and solve two big installation components: risk of human error and efficiency.

In a traditional layout of curtainwall, there are multiple passes that happen before anchors are welded to the steel structure and the glass inserted. A pass includes many provisional tasks that progress toward a more permanent step within a phase of construction; many “passes” are within a phase.

The multiple passes for a curtainwall project include:

  • measuring and marking reference points by hand
  • verifying those references
  • tact welding temporary anchor points onto the building

With Egan’s Trimble process, many of those passes are removed. A digital layout and survey of the curtainwall happen concurrently allowing anchors to be permanently welded in one pass. Therefore, saving an incredible amount of time and labor. The process also allows the team to identify structural flaws early, which allows time for correction prior to installing glass.

Successfully applying this process at U.S. Bank Stadium has led to similar work on other professional sports infrastructures. NBA franchise, the Milwaukee Bucks, will call a new, beautiful arena home beginning this summer. The aesthetically appealing arena is being constructed by M.A. Mortenson who has tasked Egan and its Trimble expertise for the arena’s complex glass and glazing scope.

“Egan’s innovative thinking and usage of Trimble is a perfect example of the versatility of technology,” said Aric Stott, Product Manager at Trimble. “As a result, they’ve run multiple glass/glazing projects with intricate architectural scopes very smoothly — and we [Trimble] have been able to implement several feature enhancements to our product that have helped us stay ahead of the curve.”

 

Faster Production For Specialty Beverages

Since 1874, Cold Spring Brewing Company has been producing and bottling beer and craft brews for the Midwest. Most recently, this nearly 150-year-old brewery has expanded its product production to include bottling tea, soda, energy drinks, and more – quickly becoming the number one specialty beverage producer in the U.S.

To keep up with the demand for specialty beverages, Cold Spring Brewing started a two phase project to expand storage capacity and increase production with the installation of a fourth production line dedicated solely to specialty beverages.

“Egan’s electrical team has partnered with Cold Spring Brewing in a maintenance capacity for many years,” said Randy Kalthoff, Egan Company Project Manager. “And we were excited to take on this new project – especially since many of us on the team are from the Cold Spring community.”

The first phase of the new storage and production line was completed last November and included a new 211,000 square foot warehouse to store the bottled production before distribution. Egan’s team completed the LED lighting installation and worked with Kinghorn Construction for both phases of construction.

“This job has had its challenges that were immediately taken care of by Egan,” said John Kinghorn, Kinghorn Construction Project Manager. “As soon as we got Egan the right information and instructions, they’ve been able to handle any situation.”

Connecting the shipping and receiving building with the newly completed warehouse, the 30,800 square foot production area has one new production line and the ability to fit an additional production line for future expansion. Scheduled to be completed this summer, the production line has the capacity to bottle 1,600 16oz. cans and 2,000 12oz. cans every minute and produce a completed pallet of specialty beverages every 50 seconds.

Egan was tasked with ensuring all of the production line systems were properly wired and integrated so the equipment can communicate and run efficiently. Egan’s process and controls team specializes in the wiring and integration of elaborate network systems and production lines, and is adept at taking multiple pieces of equipment without a design or blueprint for connection and wiring them to the speed and efficiency needs of the customer.

The new, fully automated production line process wired by Egan takes empty cans from the pallet, high heat water rinses the can to kill any bacteria, fills the can with the specialty beverage, seals the cap on the cans, final high heat water rinses to kill any additional bacteria, and boxes and palletizes for distribution.

“We’ve had a great partnership with Egan over the years,” said Andy Paavola, Cold Spring Brewing Maintenance Manager. “That has definitely helped this project go really well – and, it’s been great working with Randy [Kalthoff] and his team again.”

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN UPDATES THEIR PERFORMANCE HALL

The recently renovated Beverly & John Lord Knight Performance Hall in the University of Northwestern’s Totino Fine Arts Center recently opened. This renovated facility seats up to 1,390.

Egan’s mechanical team provided additional warmth for the atrium with the installation of two large fireplaces and in-floor heating. Our electrical team also installed energy-efficient LED’s that change color to compliment and accent events in the performance hall.

Quick Turnaround for Northern Star Company

NORTHERNSTAROn a Wednesday morning, Egan received a call that there was an emergency at Northern Star Company with their steam boiler. By the following Monday morning, With careful trade coordination and collaboration, Egan pipefitters and electricians completed the work by switching over a 900 HP high pressure steam boiler to a mobile boiler (provided by Northern Star Company) while the existing boiler was being serviced. Northern Star Company is a potato processing plant in Chaska, Minn.

PrairieCare opened a new location in Brooklyn Park in September 2015, filling a need for pediatric mental health care in Minnesota’s North Metro. The building is a cheerful example of modern design – with calming rooms, living quarters, and treatment and office spaces.

Egan Company was given a Design/Build role to install a vast network of communications, lighting, security, and power systems throughout the facility.  This integration of form and function made PrairieCare – Brooklyn Park one of Finance & Commerce’s Top Projects of 2015. Congratulations to PrairieCare and RJ Ryan Construction on this achievement!

Celebrating 70 Years of Project Expertise

From the historic W Minneapolis – The Foshay to the modern Metro Transit Light Rail System, the partnerships and projects that make up Egan Company’s 70 years of local business are too numerous to mention. We are proud to contribute to the great state of Minnesota, and we plan to continue working to create more meaningful relationships and projects for years to come.

After providing electrical work on the Hiawatha Light Rail (Blue Line) project running from Target Field to Mall of America, Egan was asked to provide electrical services for the Central Corridor Light Rail (Green Line) project. Stretching 11 miles and linking Downtown Minneapolis to Downtown St. Paul, this is the largest public works project in state history. Pictured is University Avenue in 1957 and today.

W Minneapolis – The Foshay

Once the tallest building in Minnesota, The Foshay was constructed in 1929. Since then, it has undergone many renovations, including being converted into a 32-story “W” hotel. During this renovation, Egan provided Design/Build electrical work, fire alarm, security, and close circuit TV monitoring for the hotel. The hotel also receives ongoing maintenance from Egan.

In 80 years, MSP Airport has undergone many changes. For a number of years, Egan has provided contracting services to the renovation and upgrading of the airport. Most recently, the airport installed new runway status lights, curtainwall/metal wall panels, and an open architecture building automation system. Pictured is the airport in 1962.

Many of Anoka County’s government offices are housed in the Government Center & Courthouse, a building where Egan installed the original building automation system, fire alarms, card access, and data cabling. Ongoing maintenance and upgrades are also provided for the building. Pictured is the Anoka County Courthouse in 1878 and the Government Center & Courthouse today.

IDS Center

Constructed in 1972, the IDS Center is the tallest building in Minnesota. Egan installed the mechanical systems when the building was first constructed. More recently, the IDS Center has utilized Egan to upgrade voice/data, fiber optic cabling, sound system, and provide ongoing maintenance throughout the building.

The B.H. Whipple Federal Building has undergone many renovations. Most recently, a state-of-the-art geothermal mechanical heating and cooling system, solar roof array, and large hot water storage tanks were installed and tied into one building automation system; Egan’s InterClad team also replaced 720 windows. The building also receives ongoing building automation maintenance, and regular gas detection and backflow preventer testing from Egan.

Minneapolis Convention Center

Originally the Minneapolis Auditorium, the Convention Center was constructed in 1989, with Egan providing mechanical services on the project. Since then, Egan continually provides ongoing electrical services and maintenance to the 800,000 square foot complex. Pictured is the Minneapolis Convention Center in 1966 and today.
