Mentorship on the Ice and Beyond
February 19, 2025
Commitment and drive are evident in both the work and community involvement of Shannon Kangas. As a Systems Development Specialist at Egan Company and a devoted hockey coach whose impact extends beyond the rink.
A COMMITMENT TO THE GAME
Shannon’s coaching career began in 2001 after a medical condition forced her to withdraw from playing college hockey. She has since dedicated herself to mentoring players at every level – from youth leagues to college teams. Her commitment to coaching has remained steadfast, impacting countless young athletes along the way.
Dedicating six days a week and many hours each day to high school coaching, Shannon’s role encompasses practices, games, film review, and player meetings. Additionally, she supports 10U and 15U teams, attending as many practices and games as possible – working with a total of 59 young female athletes across four different teams.
MORE THAN JUST HOCKEY
For Shannon, coaching goes beyond teaching the fundamentals of hockey—it’s a personal passion and a part of her family too. Her two daughters, both hockey players themselves, have followed in her footsteps, sharing her love for the game.

Throughout Shannon’s coaching career, she has seen firsthand the importance of strong female leadership in a sport where male coaches have traditionally been the norm. “I can be a coach, teacher, or just a listener for these girls,” Shannon shared. “Providing a positive, strong, female role model is super important. It’s not just about hockey; it’s about life lessons as well, letting them know I am always in their corner.”
Shannon’s influence helps young athletes grow into confident individuals who carry these lessons with them long after they leave the rink.
Our company is shaped by who we are, not just we do. Together we are Egan.
