Backing Local Lobbying Groups for Work Zone Safety

Thursday, April 11th, 2019

Two local lobbying groups, Citizens for Safe Work Zones (CSWZ) and AGC of Minnesota, have introduced bills that improve safety for Minnesota road workers. Egan Company has partnered with these groups and support their effort to make a positive impact on work zone safety at the legislative level.

Egan’s involvement has included guidance and recommendations to CSWZ and AGC of Minnesota, as well as providing testimonials before legislative committee hearings. We also have supported both of the parties’ objectives around eliminating distracted driving as a result of handheld mobile phones.

CSWZ Objectives for the 2019 legislative session:

  • Increased speed enforcement activities in work zones (inclusion of automated speed enforcement in work zones with speeds 45+mph)
  • Public education campaign on work zone safety
  • Establish collaborative expectations with MNDOT to improve baseline work zone safety requirements to protect contractors working on the road
  • Specific traffic control and worker protection requirements for all MnDOT jobs
  • Appropriate and additional funding from MnDOT
  • MnDOT/contractor contractual review process to ensure adequate worker protection per project

AGC of Minnesota Objectives for the 2019 legislative session:

  • Proposing/supporting bill to enact state law against using hand held mobile devices in work zones
  • Supporting additional bill to enact state law against using hand held mobile phones in a vehicle

While there is no definite timeline for these bills, more information will be available at the end of the 2019 legislative session. As a company, we will continue to support state and industry legislative initiatives that improve the safety of Minnesota road workers.

Hiring Heroes

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

For many active duty military members, transitioning out of the service can be daunting. Finding housing, employment, and acclimating back into the routine of daily life is a huge hurdle to overcome. And, although disciplined and highly-trained, many military members still struggle with unemployment.

To help ease this process and address the growing shortage for skilled construction workers, the United Association Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program was created. This 18-week program prepares active-duty military members to leave the service with sought after skills that can lead to lifelong careers in the increasingly high-demand pipe trades.

Specifically, the nationally recognized program trains and transforms heroes into Union Plumbers, Pipefitters, Welders, and Service Technicians.

Ricky Martagon, Egan Company Pipefitter Apprentice, first heard about VIP at an exit seminar he attended was transitioning out of the United States Marine Corps.

Martagon served in the Marines for four years prior to joining Egan and obtained the rank of E5 Sergeant, as well as Shop Chief for his platoon. Though an admirable rank, he’s the first to admit he continually reminds himself his previous title now holds no “authority” on the construction site.

“At times, it is a little confusing for me, but a lot of the habits from the military are still very transferable to my new career,” Martagon said. “I still would do them every day with or without rank.”

Nonetheless, the shift from protecting the country to helping build it has been a natural fit for Martagon and 1,000+ other veterans that have gone through the VIP program since 2008.

“My experience [with VIP] couldn’t have been any better. The people were great, and the instructors were even better,” said Martagon, “By the time we finished the program, we were all good friends. I strongly encourage more service men and women to look into the course.”

Martagon has been with Egan since early this year and is one of two VIP pipefitters currently with the company.

HQ Renovations Showcase Collaboration

Friday, May 11th, 2018

Innovation, integration, and efficiency – three words to describe both the process and the finished product of Egan’s newly renovated corporate office space. Last Fall, the Brooklyn Park, Minn. office underwent an extensive renovation project utilizing Egan’s in-house expertise and specialty trades. The result: an open-office environment that promotes collaboration and provides a more flexible workplace for employees.

“The office area was in need of improvements to better fit our growing employees and align with our values,” said Duane Hendricks, Egan Company President & CEO. “We had an opportunity to modernize and carry over similar themes we used at our Champlin facility to create a more efficient, open space for employees to enjoy.”

The 126,000 square foot office was last renovated in 2003, and is one of three Egan facilities in Minnesota – Champlin and its Southern Minnesota offices in Rochester and Austin.

“Our last renovation project in Champlin was an empty 180,000 square foot warehouse that we made our own in 2016,” said Tom Buirge, Egan Company

Construction Manager. “A challenge this time was renovating a fully occupied office on a tight deadline. We wanted to complete the project with as little disruption and moving around of employees as possible.”

The completed office space has additional conference rooms and huddle spaces, sit/stand desks in every workspace, an open-floor layout, workspaces for future growth, and an updated lobby with dynamic artwork displaying Egan’s multi-trade expertise and services.

“This project completes our office and facility renovations in the Twin Cities,” said Hendricks. “We expanded and upgraded our mechanical shops in 2016 to improve manufacturing efficiencies, and are thrilled with the new look and feel our employees and customers get to experience now in both our Twin Cities offices.”

EGAN’S SPECIALTY TRADES WORK PERFORMED

ELECTRICAL: replaced all existing office fixtures with LED and added space occupancy-sensored lighting

CURTAINWALL/GLASS/GLAZING: design and installation of glass walls in offices and conference rooms

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION: sound masking, work station, voice/data/fiber option, automatic window shades, audio/visual, building automation system
