Building Community Through CEO Build Day

Tuesday, October 18th, 2022

In support of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, local CEOs across the industry joined together for “CEO Build Day” where they spent the day building, networking with others, and discussing ways to impact the communities around us for years to come.

Egan Company President &CEO, James Ford volunteered alongside 17 local leaders to participate in a building project in North Minneapolis. These Twin Cities leaders contributed their time in the daylong event.  Their impact was seen in a North Minneapolis home.

“Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is always a great experience. There is something special and tangible about helping to help build someone’s future home. On top of that, being part of the CEO build day and volunteering alongside business leaders in our community made it all the more rewarding.”

Supporting Local Area Schools to Further Trade Careers

Friday, September 30th, 2022

Over the course of the year, Egan Company has supported the local Osseo Area Schools in several ways to further the future workforce by promoting careers in the construction trade industry.

Earlier this spring, our Human Resources team participated in mock interviews with high school students who were nearing their high school graduation. Through practicing and receiving feedback, students were equipped to feel more comfortable entering the job market.

“We saw a huge turnout at this Mock Interview event. It was great to see students take our comments to heart and will go into interviews now knowing much more than before. We also got to promote the opportunities in the construction industry while speaking with them,” said Egan Human Resources Generalist Tracy Pease.

Further supporting this district, Egan also provided a spaghetti dinner for the Osseo High School Track and Field student athletes before they had their final home meet of the season. During the meal, they heard about the futures that trades careers provide and the doors that are opened when working in the field. Jeremy Quam, Egan Company Project Manager, was able to provide them with a look into the industry and how it had impacted his life.

“I was able to encourage the students at Osseo High School about different career paths in the construction industry, the excellent training and benefits they’ll receive, as well as the career development opportunities that are presented at a place like Egan,” states Jeremy Quam.

“THANK YOU EGAN COMPANY! Osseo Track and Field continues to be in awe of your generosity and desire to come alongside our program to help meet the needs on and off the track. [We] are humbled, but oh so excited for the opportunities.”

John Rundquist of the Osseo Track & Field Program

Egan also participated in a career fair at Park Center Senior High at the end of the school year for students and their parents, sharing more about job openings and potential career opportunities for the future.

Staying involved and giving back to the local community is a crucial part of who Egan is as an organization. Students are the future of the workforce and we’re proud to support career development in our local community.

Developing the next generation of the workforce

Ever wondered what a summer looks like as part of Egan’s internship experience? We’re peeling back the curtain to give you an inside look at all that our interns did this summer. Back in full swing this year after two years of remote work, we welcomed 11 interns this summer.

Bridging the company, interns worked on projects within Egan’s Service, Industrial Controls, IT, HR, and Southern Minnesota teams. Within their teams, interns were mentored by coworkers, completed projects, participated in meetings, and were integrated into the flow of operations.

A few events hosted for our intern group included:

  • Kick-Off Breakfast: Interns were welcomed by our leadership team and provided with an overview of all things Egan.
  • Coffee and Career Conversations: Egan’s Senior Leaders provided their best tips and advice for entering the workforce as a professional.
  • Jobsite Ride Along: All of the interns spent a half day visiting different job sites, learning about Egan’s culture of safety while seeing our business in action.
  • Resume Workshop: Members of the Human Resources team reviewed the interns’ resumes and provided them with their expertise on setting yourself apart in an ever-active job market.
  • Capstone Presentations: At the completion of the program, all interns were able to deliver a presentation sharing their experience and takeaways from being an intern.

Always a bonus to the accomplishments and skills built with the Egan internship experience is new bonds and friendships made. Programmer Intern Jorge Mancilla, stated “My biggest takeaway from interning at Egan was how important it is to build meaningful connections with the people around you. Learning the actual job isn’t too hard when you have experienced professionals mentoring and guiding you whenever you have questions.”

Discover Egan: Orbital Welding

Tuesday, June 14th, 2022

Orbital welding: a complex process that can be broken down quite simply.

WHAT IS IT?

Also known as high-purity pipe welding, this specialized, highly automated welding process consists  of an arc that rotates 360 degrees around a static piece, whether that be pipe or another object, resulting as one continuous weld. By using this process, a uniform weld is created around pipe and tube, which would be difficult to achieve with a traditional, manual welding  technique. With the use of a computer automated welder, these welds are created in a uniform manner, resulting in them being repeatable and of higher quality with little to no room for error.

WHY USE IT?

  1. Error reduction: This automated welding decreases the potential for operator error, since the weld is completed based on the data entered in the computer. Once a weld coupon is approved, it can be easily replicated without further input or changing settings.
  2. Higher weld quality: Using this equipment creates better quality welds while meeting the strict requirements of certain industries like pharmaceuticals, which require extremely clean/pure piping.
  3. Standards and Practices: Certain processes require a high degree of weld uniformity and purity in order to meet the required standard and pass inspection.
  4. Use of labor: With the machine doing the majority of the work, manual labor is reduced and projects are completed quicker.
  5. Use in many settings: Sometimes welds need to be completed in confined spaces or high-risk environments. When utilizing orbital welding equipment, risk is reduced for operators.

COMMERCIAL MECHANICAL ORBITAL WELDING APPLICATION

  • High Purity Process Piping where specific ASME or ASTM standards are required.
  • Cleanrooms

The Electric Roundtable Visits Egan Company HQ

Tuesday, May 17th, 2022

Over the past month, Egan Company was honored to host two visits with principals and members of the Electric Roundtable (ERT) peer group, a national association of contracting service providers striving to be the best of class in all aspects of their business. These two visits served separate purposes – first a ‘New Member Visit’ and second a ‘Safety Subcommittee meeting.’ When joining ERT, all new member companies host an introductory visit in which the other peer organizations visit to learn about the company – past, present, and future. While Egan joined in 2020, the pandemic slowed the ability to gather in-person for this meeting, pushing it until spring of 2022. During the safety subcommittee meeting, members of the respective safety teams gathered for a variety of safety discussions.

Traveling from across the United States to visit Egan, these representatives were able to gain the full Egan experience. The visits included:

  • Business overviews for each of our business groups
  • Company strategic direction
  • Roundtable discussions
  • Tours of our facility and shops
  • Social activities and more!

WHY ELECTRIC ROUNDTABLE?

The Leading Edge of Building Automation with IP-Based Controllers

Monday, May 9th, 2022

Speed. Processing power. Security. All of which are part of the future of IP-based building automation controllers. When it comes to the optimization of Building Automation Systems (BAS), many believe this is where the future is headed.

MODERNIZE + OPTIMIZE

To meet the needs of customers in the automated building universe, implementing IP-based solutions is the most logical path. While IP-based building systems haven’t always been widely spread, the recent IP adoption has greatly increased, providing the potential to make them run at the highest level of reliability—while remaining cost-effective. Extremely resilient, these IP-based networks provide unmatched operations, guaranteeing that business runs as usual. As for security, these solutions are encrypted, protecting the operations of the building.

Using these secure IP-based configurations, the time and money that goes into managing a BAS system is significantly decreased.

The IP based product—both wired and unwired—provide a standard for integrating down to the device level, while allowing typical and advanced configurations that other media and systems can’t do without additional hardware, software, and time.

Egan Company Building Automation Group Manager, Kirk Wahlstrom

REAL-TIME PRODUCTIVITY

Solving problems regarding building performance needs to happen in real-time. Working on an IP-based network allows for much more bandwidth, allowing building owners, property managers, and engineers access to the data analytics they need, as fast as they need it. Egan Company Building Automation Account Manager, Michael Miller states, “IP is a faster, more secure smart building solution. It will be the technology all Building Automation Systems will migrate to in the future.”

IP-BASED CUSTOMER CASE STUDY

One of Egan’s most recent modernization projects involves the Centennial Lakes Office Park in Edina, Minn. With consideration of the most relevant and impactful migration, Egan was able to provide a full IP-based network to move away from aging networks and controllers and invest in a sustainable and serviceable future. Seamless installation allowed for the new systems to be easily integrated within multiple buildings. Installing the network backbone has provided a migration path that allows the customer to dictate the timing and areas of greatest concern.

While implementing IP technology is still the newcomer on the Building Automation block, the future of simplifying, upgrading, and modernizing is here and it’s IP-based.
